Devotion for Week of May 21, 2012 - TWO UNTUTORED LAYMEN

1 Corinthians 1:27, “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;”

A generation ago, God invaded England, Scotland and America with two untutored laymen - D.L. Moody, who had not studied preaching, and Ira Sanky, who bore no degrees in music.  They were not only untutored, they were almost uncouth.  Heavy, stocky, the last two men to impress an audience with any arts of the old Adam.

Moody made havoc of the English language.  Sanky sat his massive frame behind a tiny organ.  Anyone else would have been ridiculous.  But when Moody preached, heaven grew large and the earth shriveled.

Human beings felt as though they stood alone before God, poor sinners without one plea but Calvary.  And Sanky often had not sung one verse before hearts had melted and faces were wet with tears.
